Elliot Hanson took Laser gold at the Sailing World Cup in Enoshima by the equivalent of two Medal Races, he was that far ahead on points. Despite a tricky week of wind, Hanson read the Olympic venue better than anyone. “It’s amazing to win on Olympic waters – there’s a real history of those who can perform in venue in the years running up to the Games going on to have great success." Here Hanson speaks to Andy Rice about bouncing back from injury earlier in the season and his belief in the British squad system....

Tom Burton ran away with victory at the Sailing’s World Cup event in Miami at the end of January, a result which surprised even the reigning Olympic Champion himself. “I was using a charter boat in Miami,” says the Australian sailor. “I guess a lot of the other guys were using charter boats too, but this definitely wasn’t the world’s best boat and I was getting my arse handed to me in the training sessions leading up to the regatta. So I was surprised that I ended up winning the event the way I did.”

Australian Glenn Ashby was recruited by Larry Ellison’s America’s Cup team to help tame the 90-foot beast that was to challenge for the 2010 America’s Cup. Ashby, already dominant in the Tornado, Formula 18, and A Class fleets, took the step in stride and now the 40 year old holds a 2017 America’s Cup victory alongside his Olympic Medal and 15 World Titles. Kenneth Thelen raced in the Whitbread Round the World Race back in 1989. He's one of the big characters from the old days of round the world racing. He's as passionate about offshore racing as ever, but says it's pretty much dead in his native Finland. However, the Nord Stream Race has a chance of changing all that. 

Alan Roberts started racing on Chichester Harbour out of Hayling Island Sailing Club, crewing for his dad in an International 14 and then racing with a number of UK small-boat legends including Nick Craig, winning the Endeavour Trophy for the Champion of Champions along the way. Alan has since served his apprenticeship in the solo offshore scene in France, and has his eyes on competing in the Vendée Globe and Volvo Ocean Race.
